Overgrowth is an actionvideo game released by Wolfire Games available for Windows, macOS and Linux. It was announced on September 17, 2008 and released on October 16, 2017, after 9 years of developing and being available as early access.[1]
Overgrowth is the sequel to Lugaru, a 3Daction game made by the same company. As before, the player character is Turner, an anthropomorphicrabbit with combat skills. The game plays as a 3D third-person action game, set in a pre-industrial world of anthropomorphic fighter rabbits, wolves, dogs, cats and rats.[2] The game is designed by David Rosen.
Setting[edit]
The story takes place on the island of Lugaru, an unknown number of years after the fall of the human race, indicated by the ruins of tall man-made structures overrun by vegetation. Lugaru is a chaotic world, inhabited by anthropomorphic rabbits, wolves, rats, cats and dogs living at a pre-industrial level of technology.
Synopsis[edit]
Overgrowth's story takes place several years after the events of Lugaru and follows the same protagonist: Turner. After avenging the murder of his family, killing the Alpha wolf, and killing the corrupt king Hickory, Turner refused to take Hickory's place on the throne, instead choosing to leave the monarchy headless and wander the island in search of some new purpose. Major plot points specific to Overgrowth have not yet been revealed.[3]
Gameplay[edit]
Overgrowth is built on the gameplay of its predecessor, Lugaru,[4] and as such uses a hand-to-hand combat system that bases attacks and counters on timing and context using context-sensitive action buttons rather than different key combinations.
Features[edit]
Overgrowth utilizes a game engine called the 'Phoenix Engine'. The engine includes a number of useful features like an animation handler in which animations can be smoothly blended between,[5] a scripting system using AngelScript that is tied into the game engine allowing for a lot of control over various engine features,[6] and an ambient sound system.[7] The game is shipped with a fully featured level editor and the developers wanted to make sure that the tools required to mod the game would not be too costly or preferably free; for instance Blender.[8]
Development[edit]
Since 25 November 2008, Wolfire Games has released new Alpha tests every 2–5 months, containing most of the features so far implemented in the game. These are available to people who have pre-ordered the game.[9] Overgrowth was released 17 December 2013 as an Early Access title on Steam.[10]On January 18, 2017 the game was officially updated to beta status.[11] The game reached 1.0 and was released on October 16, 2017 which had been revealed as the release date a week earlier.[12]

Overgrowth for PC is an unusual third-person perspective action game developed by American studio Wolfire Games. The studio was founded by David Rosen, who was frequently awarded in uDevGames competition as the best Mac OS X programmer. The game is a story and technological expansion of the first game of the Lugaru studio, which was released in 2005 on PC and Mac.
Plot
Overgrowth takes place in Medieval, dystopian world consumed by anarchy and lawlessness. This universe is inhabited by unusual, anthropomorphic warriors like rabbits, wolves, dogs, cats and rats. The game takes place a few years after the events depicted in Lugaru. Turner, the main protagonist, killed the evil, corrupted king and was made the new ruler. However, he refuses to sit on the throne. Instead, he starts a new journey in order to fix the world.
Mechanics
While exploring the world of Overgrowth for PC, the protagonist will face various enemies. The battles feature a special, unusual combat system based on cautious attacks, rolls and high mobility of the character. Turner can use various melee weapons and reflect enemy attacks. Taking advantage of the surroundings is an important aspect of the game as well. For example, the protagonist can use a branch from a tree to defend himself or he can pass a river in order to escape wolves that are tracking him.
Technical aspects
The game was announced in September 2008. Its development took so much time because the developers were improving their technology called Phoenix Engine. It features detailed physics-based animation, thanks to which running, jumping and rolling is very fluent. The animations depend on circumstances, shape of the terrain, mood and even the personality of the protagonist. Weather can also impact the surroundings – for example, sunlight makes the trees grow faster.
Graphics feature 2048x2048 resolution of textures and realistic, dynamical lighting. The soundtrack was composed by Mikko Tarmia, the creator of music for Amnesia and Penumbra. The game fully supports mods, enabling the players to expand and co-create the game. In addition to traditional story campaign, the title also features online versus mode for two players.
Game score 8.8 / 10 calculated out of 47 players' votes. Expectations before the premiere: 9.3 / 10 calculated out of 109 players' votes. Similar games:
